Water or power shutdown notice: free template

A shutdown card has one job: make sure nobody is caught in the shower when the water goes off. Keep it short and put the time window in bold.

Quick answer: A shutdown notice tells customers when water or power will be off, for how long, why, and who to call. Deliver it to every affected address before the shutdown, within the notice period your network rules require.

When to send it

Send it before any planned interruption to water, power or gas. Network operators and water authorities set their own minimum notice periods, often several days in writing for planned work, and they override anything general. Check the conditions on your permit or work order.

Change everything in [square brackets], delete anything that does not apply and check it against your own conditions before you print.

PLANNED [WATER / POWER] INTERRUPTION

[Day and date], [start time] to [finish time]

To carry out [mains repairs / a new connection / maintenance] in your street, we need to turn off the [water / power] supply to your property during the time above.

Before we start

  • [Fill a jug or the kettle for drinking water.]
  • [Turn off your hot water system at the switchboard.]
  • [Switch off sensitive equipment and unplug it until power is back on.]

When the supply comes back
[Run a cold tap for a few minutes if the water looks discoloured.] [Turn your hot water system back on.]

We will restore the supply as soon as the work is finished, which may be earlier than the time shown.

Tips that save complaints later

  • Give a realistic finish time, not an optimistic one. An early finish is good news; a late one is a complaint.
  • Set the radius from the valve or works point and widen it until the count matches your isolation plan.
  • Medical and life-support customers may need a phone call as well as a card. Check your network’s requirements.
