Party notice to neighbours: free template

A friendly note before a big night turns a likely complaint into a neighbour who might pop over.

A backyard party with bunting, balloons and guests

Quick answer: A party notice tells neighbours the date, start and finish time, whether there will be music, where guests will park and a number to call if it gets too loud. Drop it in nearby letterboxes about a week before.

When to send it

Send it for any gathering bigger or louder than a normal weekend: a milestone birthday, a wedding reception at home, an engagement party or a street gathering.

Councils and police deal with noise under state laws that set quiet hours. A note does not change those hours, but it does mean neighbours call you before they call anyone else.

The template

Change everything in [square brackets], delete anything that does not apply and check it against your own conditions before you print.

[Date]

Hi neighbours,

We are having [a 50th birthday party / our wedding reception] at [address] on [day and date], from [start time] until about [finish time].

There will be [music / a band / a DJ] and around [number] guests. We will move the music inside by [time] and wind things up by [time].

Guests will park [where], and we have asked them to keep driveways clear.

If it gets too loud, please message or call [name] on [mobile] and we will turn it down straight away. [And if you would like to pop in for a drink, you are very welcome.]

Thanks for your patience,
[Names], [address]

Tips that save complaints later

  • Give a real number and answer it on the night.
  • Name a time the music moves inside or stops, and stick to it.
  • An invitation to drop in is the best complaint prevention there is.
