Scaffolding notice to neighbours: free template

Scaffold goes up loud, stays quiet, then comes down loud. Neighbours mostly want to know about privacy and the side passage.

Scaffolding on the front of a building with painters working at height

Quick answer: A scaffolding notice tells neighbours when the scaffold goes up and comes down, whether any part stands on or over their boundary or the footpath, how privacy is handled and who to call. Deliver it to adjoining homes before the erect day, and get the neighbour’s permission separately if the scaffold needs to stand on their land.

When to send it

Send it before the scaffold goes up for painting, roofing, rendering or facade work. The erect and dismantle days are noisy, and in between workers are at second-storey height looking into neighbouring yards and windows.

If the scaffold has to stand on a neighbour’s land or over the footpath, you will usually need their consent or a council permit as well. The letter is not a substitute for either.

  • [Part of the footpath on [street] will be covered by a gantry so it stays open to pedestrians.]
  • Our team will be working at roof height. We will keep music off and respect your privacy.

Thank you for your patience. If anything worries you while we are on site, please call [name] on [mobile]. We would much rather hear from you early.

Tips that save complaints later

  • Mention privacy. It is the complaint nobody puts in writing but everybody feels.
  • If the scaffold crosses the boundary, get agreement first and refer to it in the letter.
  • Footpath scaffolding usually needs a council permit. Include the permit number if you have one.
