Tree removal notice to neighbours: free template

Chainsaws, a chipper and maybe a crane, usually all in one day. A short letter the week before saves a lot of knocks on the door.

An arborist in an elevated platform cutting a branch from a large tree, with a woodchipper below

Quick answer: A tree removal notice tells neighbours the date, the hours, the noise (chainsaws, chipper, stump grinder), any footpath or road closure and who to call. Deliver it to nearby homes a few days to a week before the job, after any council permit is in hand.

When to send it

Send it once the job is booked and any tree permit is approved. Tree work is short but loud, and a chipper truck or crane can close a footpath or lane for the day.

If branches hang over a neighbour’s yard or the tree drops into their side, talk to them directly as well. The letter is the record that you told the street.

Tips that save complaints later

  • Mention cars. Asking people to move vehicles from under the canopy avoids the worst possible phone call.
  • Include the permit number if there is one. It answers the question before anyone rings council.
  • Cover the stump grinding day too if it is separate. It is often the noisiest part.
