Asbestos removal notice to neighbours: free template

The word asbestos worries people. A calm, factual letter that explains the controls does more than any reassurance on the day.

Quick answer: An asbestos removal notice tells neighbours when the work happens, that it is done by a licensed removalist, what controls are in place (wetting down, sealed wrapping, monitoring) and who to call. Deliver it to nearby homes before work starts, and follow any notification rules in your state’s work health and safety regulations and your licence conditions.

When to send it

Send it before any asbestos removal, even a small fence or eaves job. Neighbours see the suits and the plastic and assume the worst. A letter that explains the process in plain words heads that off.

Licensed removalists also have formal notification duties under work health and safety law, which differ by state and type of asbestos. This letter is a courtesy notice to the street and does not replace those. Check the rules that apply to your job.

To the owner or occupier,

Asbestos removal at [site address]

We are writing to let you know that [describe material, eg the fibre cement roof sheeting] at [site address] will be removed on [date or dates] by [business name], a licensed asbestos removalist (licence [number]).

How we keep it safe

  • The material is wetted down so fibres stay in place.
  • It is removed whole wherever possible, then wrapped in heavy plastic and sealed.
  • The work area is fenced off and signposted.
  • [Air monitoring is carried out by an independent assessor during the work.]
  • The waste goes to a licensed disposal site.

You do not need to do anything, but you are welcome to keep windows facing the site closed while we work if that makes you more comfortable.

Thank you for your patience. If anything worries you while we are on site, please call [name] on [mobile]. We would much rather hear from you early.

Kind regards,

Tips that save complaints later

  • Keep the tone calm and factual. Avoid words like “danger” and “toxic” in a courtesy letter.
  • Always include the licence number.
  • If there is air monitoring, say so. It is the most reassuring line in the letter.
